WELCOME TO 48FOURTEEN PUBLISHING!
WE APPRECIATE YOU GIVING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW YOUR WORK AND CONSIDER YOUR MANUSCRIPT FOR PUBLISHING. THE FOLLOWING PROVIDES ALL THE INFORMATION YOU WILL NEED PERTAINING TO SUBMISSIONS. AFTER REVIEWING OUR GUIDELINES, IF YOU FEEL YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A 48FOURTEEN AUTHOR, COMPLETE THE FORM BELOW TO SUBMIT YOUR MANUSCRIPT.
We are looking for fresh ideas, no matter the genre. “Cookie-cutter” type novels are a dime a dozen and not for us.
Full-length novels only, please. Word count must range between 60,000 – 100,000. Manuscripts containing a word count higher than 100,000 will not be considered unless the query letter pulls us in and forces us to review the chapters you have submitted. State the exact word count in your query letter.
KEEP IT CLEAN
We do not publish any material that glorifies depraved or illegal acts such as sexual assault, pedophilia, bestiality, rape, or necrophilia. Any sexual scenes must be in good taste.
We do not publish any material that glorifies racism, hatred, or intolerance of religion, creed, or sexual preference. A novel may explore these issues but the reader should feel as though you are illustrating the acts as immoral and not promoting them.
TO PLOT OR NOT TO PLOT?
An emphasis on plot and characterization is key. Plot is NOT secondary with us. For romance novels, we could care less if your heroine falls madly in love with the hunkiest guy in the universe; if you have no story to go with this, we’re afraid you are not right for 48fourteen.
All material must be new and previously unpublished. If we are interested in your writing, we may consider other works previously published.
48fourteen Publishing is a royalty-paying publisher. 48fourteen Publishing is not a vanity press or a self-publishing service.
There are no fees associated with publishing through 48fourteen. The costs of professional editing, cover design, formatting, distribution, marketing support, etc. are the sole responsibility of the company – not the author.
All material published is under contract. Any rights sold to 48fourteen Publishing revert to the author at the end of the contract period. Authors retain the copyright of their work. 48fourteen will never contract a novel open-ended. All contracts have an expiration date.
THINGS TO INCLUDE
Save your document as: (lastname), (firstname) – (title).(filetype). Preferred file format: PDF
IS IT REALLY NECESSARY?
A query letter is very necessary! It should tell me all I need to know about you at a glance. It especially tells me why I should open the attached files, and review your first three (3) chapters. In your query letter, be sure to provide:
MAKE IT PRETTY?
There are no format requirements for the sample chapters. When asked to submit your full manuscript, we will provide you with any formatting preferences.
WHO ARE YOU?
Always make sure we have your contact information on each email you send us, including queries. For all initial contact, we will respond to your email, however, it’s best if we know who we’re replying to instead of crazzzzygurl82@yahoo!
We strive for the fastest turnaround times possible. Your specific time may vary depending on how many submissions we are currently fielding. If you have not received a response within five (5) months, please re-submit your work if you are still interested.
We understand getting published takes a great deal of time and effort on your part. Waiting around for one publisher for months is a daunting task and as such, we accept simultaneous submissions. You are free to query other publishers or agents while awaiting our decision. We only ask that you make sure to inform us if anyone else has accepted your work.
Sending out rejection letters is definitely a downer – for you and for me. We don’t like writing them any more than you like reading them. If you have not received a response within five (5) months, chances are your work may have been rejected. Here are a few reasons why your work may be rejected:
If we select your book for publication, we will publish within 9-12 months of the contract.
You may submit as many manuscripts as you like, however, if we decide to accept more than one novel we will stagger the release dates so as not to conflict with your current release.
Always present your best work. Your manuscript should be as polished as you can possibly make it. Your query letter should give us the information we ask for, and nothing more.
Is this the first draft of your novel? If so, don’t send it to us. You have one chance to make a good first impression. No one writes a perfect first draft—wait before sending, and make sure it’s as good as it can be. Rewrite and edit a few times.
Is this your first novel? Everyone gets excited about his or her first novel. Most of the time, it’s not going to be an author’s best effort, however. Consider putting the first one aside for a while, write some more, then come back to it later.
Has someone other than you read your novel? If you’re a first time writer, it’s very important that you get feedback from other people experienced with writing who can be objective about your work. This doesn’t include your mom, teacher, or best friend. Look for workshops, contests that give feedback, and critique groups.
Have you checked your book for things like head hopping (or rapid point-of-view shifts) and other problems?
We’re looking for manuscripts with believable characters, interesting premises, crisp dialogue, and fast-paced action. Technical skill is critical. Please be sure to spell check your work and use proper grammar.
